7 Items You Should Pack for Travel

My family and I love to travel. We recently took a trip to Croatia, which had been on our list for ages! Croatia has become increasingly popular in the past decade or two, made even more so by the fact that several Croatian locations were used in HBO’s Game of Thrones series. Because of this, Croatia can be very crowded during their high, summer season. We had a chance to travel in early September, which is at the tail end of Croatia’s high season. We did encounter some crowds, but it was totally manageable. According to conversations we had with locals, we missed the throngs and high temperatures by a week or so.

We had an amazing time, made even better but a few items. Here are the products that were the most useful during our trip.

Feather & Bone Soothing Balm ($13.99 for 2oz.)

Traveling can be incredibly dehydrating for the skin, so I was glad to have this moisturizing balm with me. It’s packaged in a portable tin, and contains nourishing ingredients, like karanja oil, aloe vera butter, and shea butter. It’s perfect for applying to the hands and other dry areas of the body and it’s safe for babies, too (not like I one, but worth mentioning!). It’s very rich, but it absorbed quickly and kept my skin soft on the trip.

Feather & Bone is an indie, woman-owned skincare company and this balm is a must-try from their collection of natural products.

Wear SPF 50 Sunscreen Sport Stick ($30 for 3, $14 each)

Another portable product, this water-resistant SPF stick that was designed for athletes really came in handy. It glides easily on the skin and doesn’t leave any cast, unlike other SPF products. It can be used on the face and body, and because it’s so small, it fits easily into a tiny travel bag.

My husband and I often struggle with SPF products stinging our eyes and this sport stick gave us no problems, despite the heat and repeated dips in the water.

Bocasal Crossbody Wallet Case for iPhone 15 Pro ($29.99)

I use this phone case with the wrist strap every day and I love that it comes with an accordion-style wallet for my cash and cards (and offers RFID protection). When I travel, I use the crossbody strap, which keeps my phone close at hand so I can take pictures when I travel, but allows me to keep my hands free. Available in several colors.

Fjällräven High Coast Totepack ($90, currently $74.95 and up)

I was sent this bag to test recently and I fell in love with it on this trip. It has multiple straps, so it can be carried like a tote bag, a crossbody, or a backpack. It’s also water-resistant, and the perfect size for a day of sightseeing, with plenty of space for a water bottle, snacks, a mobile charger, and even a light jacket or towel. It also tucks into its own pocket when not in use.

Glocusent USB Rechargeable Book Light ($22.99. Currently $10.99 and up)

Bedtimes can be hard to coordinate when you’re traveling to another time zone because everyone adjusts differently.

This tiny folding light allowed me to read at night while my husband slept and it functioned like a flashlight if I needed to get up in the middle of the night. There are multiple color and brightness settings and the light is available in several colors, including hot pink and white.

Limitless Innovations ChargeHubGO+ ($39.99)

I’ve written about this 5000mA portable device charger before as a must for commuters, but it’s fantastic for travel as well. On this trip, thanks so its slim profile, it fit perfectly into the small sling bag I wore everywhere. It also conveniently has two cords built in so I never have to worry about bringing cords along.

I did happen to lose it on this trip, which was such a bummer! I’ll be replacing the ChargeHubGO+ before our next trip.

JBL Clip 5 ($79.95. Currently $69.95)

This was the first trip that we thought to bring a Bluetooth speaker and I’m so glad we did. We all love music, so it was nice to have our music playing when we were spending time at our Airbnb. The other unexpected bonus was that we used it in our rental car for music and driving directions on a couple of occasions when the Bluetooth connection in the car was spotty.

The speaker is waterproof and dust-resistant and has a hook that can be attached almost anywhere. Despite its tiny size, this speaker has excellent sound and 12 hours of playtime on one charge. Available in a variety of colors and patterns.
