This week’s muse is author and beauty writer, Baze Mpinja. Before embarking on a freelance writing career, Baze was a beauty editor for Glamour magazine and a contributor to The Girls in the Beauty Department, Glamour.com’s beauty blog. Prior to Glamour, Baze served as beauty editor for Vibe Vixen, a girly spin-off of the music title Vibe. She was also the associate beauty editor for Suede, short-lived but fabulous multicultural fashion and beauty magazine. Baze was at Suede when we met. She literally lit up the room when she walked into the Three Custom Color Specialists’s lab, and I knew instantly that we’d be friends.
Today, Baze writes for magazines like Marie Claire, Essence, Brides and People StyleWatch and online at Fashion Unfiltered, Vogue.com and Elle.com. She also penned a book, Seventeen Ultimate Guide to Beauty (Running Press, 2012). In addition, Baze is the founder of Beautycism.com, a blog that examines beauty in the media, pop culture and real life.
Here are Baze’s beauty secrets:
- “When I don’t feel like dealing with my hair, I like to cover it up with Zara scarves and headwraps from The Wrap Life. I love pairing my head gear with bright lipstick colors —it makes me feel casual and chic at the same time.
- In the summertime, I don’t wear much makeup. Just my beloved L’Oreal Voluminous Mascara and bright lips. One of my favorite lip combos is Bite Beauty Matte Crème Crayon in Blood Orange with a bit of Make Up Forever Lip Gloss in Orange on top. It’s more unexpected than red or hot pink.
- I love wearing sheet masks when I’m relaxing, watching TV or just sitting on the couch surfing the internet. When I was in LA last fall, I bought a bunch of fun sheet masks, like the Dewytree Deep Detox Black Sheet Mask and Naisture Red Wine Mask Pack at a beauty supply store in Little Tokyo. My skin always looks healthy and dewy after using a sheet mask.
