Tax season usually isn’t very magical, but what if you used your refund to do something truly unforgettable? Consider taking your entire multi-generational family to Walt Disney World. From grandparents to toddlers to cousins, it’s the perfect place to create lifelong memories together. With the average tax refund in 2025 reaching $3,271, many families may find that their return can cover a significant portion of the trip. While a Disney vacation might seem out of reach, with a little planning and a few smart money-saving strategies, it doesn’t have to break the bank. If you’re thinking about using your refund for a magical family getaway, here’s how we made it happen and how you can too.

1. A Hotel for Every Budget
You can use some or all of your tax return to book a Disney resort that fits your budget whether it’s a Value, Moderate, Deluxe or Villa property. We booked a four-night stay at Art of Animation Resort which was perfect for our multigenerational family because of their Lion King Family Suites that can sleep 6 people. The properties direct access to the Disney Skyliner made park-hopping easy for grandparents needing to return mid-day, while the teens stayed on to enjoy extended hours. The Skyliner also has excellent usability for scooters and strollers, making it a win for all ages. Be sure to also enjoy some of the resort benefits which includes water park admission on check-in day for stays in 2025.

2. Use a Travel Agent and Unlock Hidden Mickey Perks
From getting the best deal on a hotel, to dining reservations to guiding you through using the Lightning Lane system, a knowledgeable travel advisor can save families both money and stress. Robin Blanz, a Disney certified travel agent with Magic Family Getaways, explains that working with an agent can also help uncover extra deals. “Be sure to check for promotions available to Disney+ subscribers or Disney Visa Card holders, these often include significant savings,” says Blanz. “Right now, Disney+ subscribers can book rooms at Disney’s All-Star Sports Resort for as low as $99 per night, plus tax, valid for select summer stays.” Keep in mind working with an agent does not cost the traveler any extra fees.

3. Save Money on Food
There are plenty of ways to save money on food inside the Disney parks. Believe it or not, a meal plan can actually help you cut costs especially for families who like to plan ahead. But even without it you can still eat well and save quite a bit of money. Many quick-service meals come with generous portions that can easily feed two people, especially when you add in snacks throughout the day. Instead of ordering full combo meals, opt to purchase entrées à la carte, you’ll often save a few dollars by skipping the sides and drinks. Two of our favorite counter service places are Satu’li Canteen in Pandora at Animal Kingdom and Les Halles Boulangerie & Patisserie in the France Pavilion at Epcot. From freshly baked pastries, to savory quiches and warm breads, Les Halles is a hidden gem that delivers both value and flavor.

4. Refillable Bottles and Buckets are a MUST
You’re allowed to bring your own snacks and small meals into the parks, which can help avoid the cost of buying multiple full meals. A Disney themed refillable popcorn bucket is another smart investment, after the initial purchase, refills are just a few dollars and make for a great snack everyone can share. Skip bottled water and ask for complimentary cups of ice water at any quick-service location or refill your own bottle at water stations throughout the park.
Pro Tip: Every Disney park has a Starbucks, so you can still enjoy your favorite cup of coffee on vacation.

5. Use Gift Cards to Stay on Budget
Head to your local warehouse stores like BJ’s Wholesale Club, Costco or Sam’s Club where you can often find discounted Disney gift cards from warehouse stores. These can sometimes save you up to 5 percent and even more during the holidays. Using gift cards in the parks can also help keep you on budget while spending in the parks! ***Disclosure: The writer and her family were hosted by Disney.
