You’ve heard the rumors about how expensive weddings can be — now you’re experiencing it firsthand. Whether you’re fortunate enough to have family members who are footing the bill or you’re scraping the cash together on your own, there are many ways to cut costs without feeling like you’ve made sacrifices.
The Venue
Getting married on a spring or summer weekend is prime wedding time, and that will be reflected in the cost. You can save a lot if you get married outside this window, but an important part of planning your wedding is identifying the things that really matter to you and budgeting accordingly.
If you’re finding that a venue is completely out of the budget, consider free (or almost free) options like a family home or a park.
Cocktail hour
There is more than one way to hold a cocktail hour. The venue will probably offer a package, but ask if there is any flexibility. Ask about the cost difference between passed hors d’oeuvres vs. a buffet. The buffet, if available, will be cheaper. Consider a limited bar with wine, beer, and a signature cocktail vs. a full open bar. There is also the option to set a time frame for the open bar and then with a transition to a cash bar so the free drinks aren’t flowing all night.
Lighting & decor
Some venues will let you handle a portion or all of the decorating so you can personalize your event. You can use this to your financial benefit. If you can provide some of the decor, that will significantly decrease your costs. And if you go for lights and candles, they can be reused!
Here are a few budget-friendly lighting and decor options:
LED Curtain Lights ($36.99)
These “icicle” lights can be hung behind sheer curtains or around windows for a twinkly effect.
Chiffon Table Runners ($14.80)
Sheer table runners can be used to give a softer look to tables, or can be decoratively draped elsewhere.
Artificial Flowers ($25.99)
Making centerpieces with artificial flowers means that the flowers can be re-purposed afterward.
Circle Dot Garland ($12.99)
Give any room a festive feel with this sparkling garland.
Battery-Operated Tea Lights ($18.99)
These little lights add glamour to any table. They’re submersible, so the options are endless!
The dress
The dress can eat up a big part of your budget, but there are ways to shop smart. Be open to vintage or consigned dresses, or even dresses that aren’t specifically for brides. There are lovely bridesmaid dresses or formalwear that would work for a wedding dress.
Destination weddings
Dying to get married somewhere exotic? It may not be as pricey as you think. First of all, fewer guests will be able to attend, which will reduce your headcount (harsh, but true). Also, while “all-inclusive” may sound pricey, resorts will often take care of so many of the details for one package price, so opting for all-inclusive can be surprisingly affordable.
Room blocks
Once you have decided on a venue, choose a hotel nearby and get those room blocks reserved before another wedding party snags them.
If all or some of your group stays in the same place, you will have access to perks, including upgrades, a free night, and extra room amenities.
Note to guests, while it’s fun to stay at the same place as everyone else, compare prices with other hotels nearby. Staying elsewhere may be a concession you make to stay on budget.
