Beauty Secrets:  Michelle Breyer

This week’s muse is Michelle Breyer, a rock star entrepreneur, who was named one of the 50 Most Influential People in the Multicultural Market by Women’s Wear Daily last year. Seventeen years ago, she took a personal frustration with her own curls and built it into a massive social media platform for hair, TextureMedia, which reaches 26 million readers a month.TextureMedia was recently acquired by Ultra/Standard, an industry leader in multicultural hair care and beauty distribution. Michelle has also consulted with such companies as Unilever, L’Oreal and Paul Mitchell to help shape their textured hair platforms and has shared her message of empowerment with other female entrepreneurs, inspiring them to channel their own passions into successful careers.

I had been keeping an eye on Michelle’s career for a while and I was fortunate enough to meet her in person this summer when she was doing some research for her upcoming book, “The Texture Revolution: Inspiration and Advice from NaturallyCurly,” which will be coming out late next summer. Keep your eyes peeled!

So much about beauty for me is about confidence. I find that if I’m feeling good about myself, it seems to be contagious, even if I have my hair in a bun and I’m in yoga pants.

Here are Michelle’s beauty secrets:

  1. “Exercise! I feel so good after a run or do a yoga class. Exercise gives me a glow, and I know I’ve done something healthy for myself. I try to work out 4-5 times a week minimum, even if it’s going for a long walk.

2. If I’m going out, I love a good statement necklace. I always feel naked unless I have a big beautiful necklace on, and I’ve found an amazing necklace can take a boring outfit and make it something special. My grandmother always wore big earrings and big necklaces and I think I inherited that from her. I typically get stopped on airplanes, on the street, at the doctor, etc. for my necklaces. Some of my favorite are from J. Crew, like the blossom necklace below. In addition, I like Kendra Scott and a California jewelry designer named Julez Bryant who makes amazing jewelry using rose gold, yellow gold and white gold.

3. I’m all about good skincare, and I can’t live without my Skinceuticals C E Ferulic Serum. I don’t expect to look 20 again, but I want to look like the best version of 54 that I can.

4. Deep conditioners are a must. My coarse curly hair looks and feels completely different after using a good deep conditioners. Some of my favorites include Jessicurl Too Shea! Extra Moisturizing Conditioner, Mixed Chicks Deep Conditioner, Curl Girl Unstress and Mane Choice Ancient Egyptian and Anti-Breakage & Repair Antidote Hair Masque.”
